Throughout my studies and industry experience, I have taken part in both formal and informal networking across a range of environments, including university workshops, industry talks and professional settings such as Rugby All-Stars, and Chinnor RFC events. I also engaged with online professional communities through LinkedIn, where I connected with professionals in marketing, events and creative production. Through these interactions, I gained opportunities to discuss career paths, sector expectations and current industry trends.
Reflecting on these experiences, I recognised that my confidence in networking developed significantly over time. At first, I found approaching professionals somewhat intimidating, particularly in unfamiliar settings. However, many of the conversations were welcoming and informative, which helped me feel more comfortable initiating dialogue and asking thoughtful questions. I also noticed that informal conversations during work experiences often felt more natural, allowed for deeper insights and gained more of a professional connection.
From these reflections, I learned that effective networking relies on clear communication and genuine curiosity. Building meaningful connections requires active listening and the ability to relate to others’ experiences rather than focusing solely on presenting my own achievements. I also became aware of the importance of long-term relationship-building rather than viewing networking as a transactional exchange.
Moving forward, I plan to strengthen my networking skills by attending more industry events, engaging more consistently on LinkedIn and maintaining regular contact with professionals I meet. I also intend to join relevant marketing and events associations to broaden my exposure to sector developments. By applying these strategies, I aim to expand my professional network and create stronger connections for future career opportunities.
